Prestige skins are League of Legends' limited-edition tier: golden-styled variants of event skins that you could not simply buy for RP. Since the first one — Prestige K/DA Akali during Worlds 2018 — they have become the game's main scarcity mechanic, and a big reason accounts carrying them hold value.
What makes a skin "prestige"
A prestige edition is a reworked version of an existing epic skin: new model textures (usually a gold/white theme), new particles and often a new splash. Mechanically it is still the same skin line — what you are paying for is the limited window and the visual flex.
How prestige skins are obtained
- Event tokens: during the skin's event, grinding missions and buying the pass earns tokens redeemable for the prestige edition. When the event ends, so does the token route.
- Mythic Essence: Riot's 2022 rework moved prestige access to Mythic Essence, a slow-drip currency from passes and capsules. Older prestige editions rotate through the Mythic shop — but only some of them, only sometimes.
Which prestige skins are hardest to get
The early, event-locked editions are the collector items: the 2018–2020 wave (Prestige K/DA Akali, Prestige K/DA Ahri, Prestige True Damage Qiyana and friends) either never returned or resurfaced only briefly. If you missed the window, the only way to play them is on an account that earned them at the time.
