League of Legends has shipped well over a thousand skins, but a handful have crossed from cosmetics into collector territory — skins that have not been obtainable for a decade or more, and that effectively price the accounts holding them. Here are the rarest tiers, from museum pieces to the ones you can realistically still get.
The untouchables
- PAX Twisted Fate (2009) — handed out as physical codes at PAX. The definitive collector skin; accounts carrying it trade for four figures.
- Black Alistar (2009) — a preorder bonus from the game's original retail box.
- PAX Jax (2010) and PAX Sivir (2011) — later PAX handouts, still vanishingly rare.
- King Rammus (2009) — closed-beta reward, instantly recognizable Bowser homage.
These were distributed as one-time codes and never re-sold. Riot has occasionally released "neo" variants (like Neo PAX Sivir) precisely because the originals cannot come back.
Very rare, occasionally surfacing
- Silver Kayle, Young Ryze, Goth Annie — retail/collector's edition bonuses from the earliest years.
- Championship Riven (2012) — the Season 2 Worlds skin; a 2016 re-release was marked with a crown toggle, keeping the original distinct.
- Victorious skins — free ranked-season rewards (Victorious Jarvan IV, Janna, Elise…). Each is locked to having played that season, so older ones are permanently capped in supply.
Limited-run prestige editions
Since 2018, prestige skins have been the modern scarcity mechanic: golden-themed editions earnable only during an event window. Many older prestige editions eventually rotate through the Mythic Essence shop, but several event exclusives have never returned. How people actually get rare skins today
Realistically, three ways:
- Mythic Essence rotations — for the prestige editions Riot chooses to bring back.
- Waiting on legacy vault re-runs — periodic, unpredictable, and never covering true limiteds.
- Buying an account that owns the skin — the only route for anything permanently retired.
