The definition
A smurf account is a secondary account used by a player who already has a main. The name goes back to 1990s Warcraft II players who hid their identities behind the nicknames "PapaSmurf" and "Smurfette" — the label stuck for every alternate account since.
What players use smurfs for
- Playing with friends: ranked restricts queueing across wide rank gaps. A fresh account lets a Diamond player duo with a Silver friend legitimately.
- Learning new roles and champions: practicing a new role on your main costs LP and MMR. On a smurf, losses are consequence-free.
- A clean slate: some players simply want a fresh MMR and a match history that reflects how they play now, not three years ago.
- Region switching: moving to another server (say, for university or work abroad) means starting an account there anyway.
What a good smurf account includes
